Presenter: Charisse Nixon, Ph.D.
This interactive workshop will focus on building positive connections between caring adults and adolescents. Using activities, participants will have opportunities to increase their empathy and positive connections. The role of adolescent brain development will also be highlighted in managing feelings.
This presentation is a focused discussion for young adults and is meant for ages 12 and above. Ages 12 -18 should attend with a trusted adult.
Pizza and pop will be provided at 6pm. The presentation will begin at 6:15.
Caregivers attend with youth to open important lines of communication and learn helpful tools together!
BIO: Charisse Nixon, Ph.D., serves as a Full Professor of Psychology at Penn State Behrend. She also serves as the Associate Director for the Susan Hirt Hagen Center for Community Outreach, Research, and Evaluation—a Center dedicated to promoting and sustaining positive communities for youth. She trains educators in the areas of resilience, adolescent development, and bullying prevention. Her programs offer a unique integration of empirical research and practical strategies to help educators, mental health professionals, and caring adults create environments that optimize developmental outcomes for children and adolescents. Building students’ resilience through effective mentoring practices is a core tenet of Dr. Nixon’s work. Charisse has a heart for young people–for young people to actually thrive and not just survive.
